Silver Jewellery Care Tips and Tricks
Sterling silver is famous for the beautiful contrast between the bright white and dark oxidized surface. On some of my work I have already applied a dark patina to draw attention to the details. This is also a naturally occurring process. As you wear your jewellery you may notice the raised areas that come in contact with your skin will remain white and the recessed areas will darken.
To maintain this gorgeous contrast never use a silver tarnish remover dip. Instead use a soft toothbrush with mild soap to break up and remove any build up of dirt, oil and lotions. The patina will not be harmed.
A polishing cloth embedded with polishing compound (my personal favorite brand are “sunshine” polishing cloths) will remove light layers of tarnish from the top surface. These are great for removing tarnish from chains as well!
Wearing and storing your jewellery
Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs or hot springs. This can cause premature tarnish and etch the surface over time.
Remove your jewellery when gardening or exercising. Take off your earrings and necklaces before going to sleep.
The perfect place to store your jewellery is away from sunlight and humidity. Pack your jewellery pieces away individually in little baggies to prevent scratching. These bags are also a great way to slow the process of tarnish – anti tarnish strips work great as well.
These basic tips will help you keep your jewellery looking bright and beautiful. Feel free to reach out to me at any time if you have questions about your jewellery!
